  • Shooting Range Prohibitions

    The following acts are prohibited within shooting ranges:

    1. Use of all targets including clay, skeet, paintball, or exploding targets except for targets that are made of paper or a retail product specifically designed for target practice;
    2. Failure to adhere to posted range safety rules;
    3. Firing while persons are down range;
    4. Entering the area behind the backstop, which has been designated as a safety zone by the placement of “Entry Prohibited” signs;
    5. Entering or using the area for any purpose other than target shooting;
    6. Possessing or using alcoholic beverages while using or occupying the area;
    7. Entering, using or remaining in the area between sunset and sunrise.

Forest Order

Pursuant to the provisions of 16 U.S.C., Section 551, and Subpart B in Title 36 C.F.R. 261 as listed below, to provide for visitor safety, I am prohibiting the following acts:

Location: The portions of National Forest System lands within the Daniel Boone National Forest containing Clear Creek Shooting Range on the Cumberland Ranger District, Whitman Branch Shooting Range on the London Ranger District, and Keno and Appletree Shooting Ranges on the Stearns Ranger District. The area is further described in the attached map. 

Effective Date: This Closure Order is in effect February 24, 2015 and continues until rescinded.

Prohibited Acts:

  1. Use of all targets including clay, skeet, paintball, or exploding targets except for targets that are made of paper or a retail product specifically designed for target practice (36 CFR 261.53(e));
  2. Failure to adhere to posted range safety rules (36 CFR 261.53(e));
  3. Firing while persons are down range (36 CFR 261.53(e));
  4. Entering the area behind the backstop, which has been designated as a safety zone by the placement of “Entry Prohibited” signs (36 CFR 261.53(e));
    5) Entering or using the area for any purpose other than target shooting (36CFR 261.58(b));
  5. Possessing or using alcoholic beverages while using or occupying the area (36CFR 261.58(bb));
  6. Entering, using or remaining in the area between sunset and sunrise (36 CFR261.58(l)).

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:

  • Any Federal, State or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty;
  • Any authorized person engaged in official administrative duties regarding National Forest Administration;
  • Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A.

Violations of the above prohibition set forth are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months or both. See 16 U.S.C. 551, 18 U.S.C. 3559 and 3571.
