Clifty Wilderness
Set aside by Congress in 1985, Clifty Wilderness offers countless opportunities to explore one of the most biodiverse areas in North America. Clifty Wilderness is a rugged area characterized by miles of high cliffs, steep valleys, numerous sandstone arches, rock shelters and boulder-strewn creeks. The geographic location, topography and glacial history have created created an environment for abundant wildlife and more than 750 flowering plants and 170 mosses. Many of these species are listed as endangered, threatened, sensitive or rare.
Motorized or mechanized equipment is prohibited within the 12,371-acre area so visitors are free to explore nature's solitude and scenic beauty without modern interruptions. Located within the Red River Gorge Geological Area and bisected by the Red Wild and Scenic River, this Wilderness has more than 20 miles of trail that lead hikers through stream valleys with dense hemlock forest and across ridges with spectacular landscape views. The terrain is rugged and steep, offering plenty of physical challenge and adventure. There are few, if any, signs to guide you inside the wilderness. You will be challenged to be prepared, self-sufficient and creative.
