ARD Bear Canister Program
Bear Resistant Canister Program
Bear resistant canister borrowing program is specifically to educate and assist visitors arriving and recreating on the Pisgah National Forest, via Appalachian Ranger District, who are unprepared for proper food storage.
Canisters may not be borrowed for another recreation site off of the (ARD traverssed) PNF
Rental Standard Operating Procedures:
- Canisters are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.
- Canisters are available for up to seven (7) days only, depending upon high demand. The ARD office reserves the right to assign fewer days based on incoming requests.
- Canisters are available for individuals over eighteen (18) who have proper federal or state identification.
- Canisters must be checked out, and back in, in person, at the Appalachian Ranger District during office hours. Return appointment will be noted on agreement form.
- Items must be returned on time, clean, and undamaged. Borrower agrees that not returning the canister, or returning in an unsanitary or damaged condition, is a violation of 36 CFR 261.10(L), resulting in violation notice via Law Enforcement.
- Canisters are not available to fulfill large group requests, as stock is limited. Maximum of three (3) canisters may be borrowed at one time per group. Fewer may be assigned based on stock.
