For more details on the Fernow Experimental Forest see the vast list of publications available: https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/ef/locations/wv/fernow/.

Original metadata created on 10/24/2011. Minor metadata updates on 11/26/2014. On 11/24/2015 four additional years of data were added (2010-2013), data for two additional watersheds were added (WS-10: 1985-2013 and WS-13: 1989-2013), the watershed map was updated, and minor updates were made to the metadata. Minor metadata updates on 12/06/2016. On 8/17/2017 two additional years of data were added (2014-2015) for all watersheds, and minor updates were made to the metadata. On 01/09/2020 two additional years of data were added (2016-2017) for all watersheds, and minor updates were made to the metadata. On 08/27/2021 two additional years of data were added (2018-2019) for all watersheds, and minor updates were made to the metadata. Previous watershed 3 (WS-3) daily streamflow data for 1951-2017 were calculated using an incorrect watershed area. These data have been corrected in this updated 2021 version of the data publication. Previously reported daily streamflow data for WS-3 were 1.15 percent low.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Water level data digitized from recorder strip charts are accurate within +/- 0.004 feet (0.001 cubic feet per second) based on standard methods for the tabulation of discharge from small streams instrumented with V-notch weirs or H-type flumes. Water level digital data measured by shaft encoder water level sensors are accurate within +/- 0.01 feet according to the manufacturer specifications.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All data in this dataset have undergone quality assurance checks. Raw data are compared across sites to identify errors in operation or chart processing. Missing data due to equipment malfunctions are estimated from other nearby watersheds.
Completeness_Report:
Overall, annual data completeness was 100 percent.

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
Water level was measured continuously with a Belfort model FW-1 strip chart recorder at the 120-degree V-notch weirs on watersheds WS-1, WS-2, WS-3, WS-4, WS-5, WS-6 and WS-7 from 1951 through April 2010, and at the 2-foot H-type flumes on watersheds WS-10 and WS-13 from the mid-1980s through July 2013. Strip charts were changed weekly. Water level was measured from May 2010 through 2019 at the weirs (WS-1, WS-2, WS-3, WS-4, WS-5, WS-6 and WS-7) and from August 2013 through 2019 at the flumes (WS-10 and WS-13) with Ott Thalimedes shaft encoder water level sensors with integrated data loggers. Data were downloaded weekly. Throughout the entire measurement period reference hook gauge readings were recorded when the strip charts were changed or data were downloaded.

Process_Description:
Water level strip charts were digitized annually. Stream discharge (cubic feet per second) is calculated from water level using either a standard-format equation (discharge = 4.43 * water level^2.449) calibrated to each 120-degree V-notch weir or the rating table for 2-foot H-type flumes in Agricultural Handbook 224 (Brakensiek et al. 1979). Streamflow is averaged daily and converted to millimeters.

Brakensiek, D.L.; Osborn, H.B.; Rawls, W.J., coords. 1979. Field manual for research in agricultural hydrology. Agric. Handbook 224. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Agriculture. 550 p.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Digital water level data are aggregated monthly and then annually from the weekly data logger downloads. Data processing then follows the methods described for digitized strip chart data.

Watershed 3 (WS-3) daily streamflow data for 1951-2017 were previously calculated using an incorrect watershed area. In July 2021 daily streamflow data were recalculated for WS-3 using the correct area factor. Previously reported daily data for WS-3 were 1.15 percent low.

Process_Description:
A thorough review of all streamflow data in this data publication in July 2021 found minor errors affecting a small number of days for four watersheds: WS-6 in February 1964, WS-7 in October and November 2011, and WS-10 in December 1986. All errors have been corrected.
