Seed in place two months, germinated at base of needle bundle on 3-year-old ponderosa pine stem; primary root with tip hidden under the base of the needle sheath; strings of viscin hold seed to the needle sheath. B. Seed in place 1 year, shows development of holdfast at the end of primary root, exposed by bending back the needle bundle; primary strands have penetrated the host cortex from the holdfast. |
