| Comments: | A. Living witches broom in lower crown of large pole; in all probability, this abnormality will persist after the crown above it has receded. B. Dead witches broom, showing branch malformation caused by an old infection. C. Bole canker, probably the result of dwarf mistletoe entering the trunk through an infected branch after the tree had attained a large size. Trunk infections in small trees are often lethal or result in deformity. The wood included in trunk cankers is pitch-soaked and brashy. |
