Joint Fire Science Program:
Equipment and Strategies to
Enhance the Post-wildfire Establishment and Persistence of Great
Basin Native Plants
Research Sites
The JFSP-funded study is projected to be established at
two study sites in each of two years. Sites were established in
Burns, Oregon and Mountain Home, Idaho for the 2007-2008 growing
season, with potential sites for the 2008-2009 growing season being
searched for in Eastern Idaho and Northern Utah. A preliminary
study, established before the JFSP funding, was established during the
2006-2007 growing season at two locations near Elko, Nevada. |

Glass Butte Research Site
Glass Butte research site, in Lake County, OR, is
located within the Roundtop Butte Fire which burned more than 9,000 acres in
July of 2007. Drill-seeded in 2007, winter hand-broadcast 2008. Vegetation monitoring completed during May-June of 2008 and 2009. |
Mountain Home Research Site
The Mountain Home research site, in Elmore County, ID,
was part of the Northflat Fire that burned nearly 2,500 acres in July of
2007.
Drill-seeded in 2007, winter hand-broadcast 2008. Vegetation monitoring completed during May-June of 2008 and 2009. |

Scooby Research Site

The Scooby research site, in Box Elder County, UT. Drill-seeded in 2008, winter hand-broadcast 2009. Vegetation monitoring completed during May-June of 2009 and 2010. |
Saylor Creek Research Site
The Saylor Creek research site in Owyhee County, ID. Drill-seeded in 2010, winter hand-broadcast 2011. Prospected vegetation monitoring to be completed May-June of 2011 and 2012. |
Study Plot Design
The plot layout will test six post-fire seeding
methods at four seeding rates. Each study site has 80 plots, the 65
smaller plots have 13 different treatment combinations, while the 15 larger plots
have 3 different treatment combinations. Approximately 66 acres will exclude
grazing while the other 30 acres will eventually be grazed. All
measurements are in feet. |
| |
Each plot is coded with its potential treatment: |
R = modified rangeland drill |
| |
T = minimum-till experimental drill |
C = control (no seeding treatment) |
| |
The expression following the “+” indicates the
broadcast treatment (if applicable): |
BC = broadcast over drill rows in fall |
wBC = broadcast over snow in winter |
| |
The expression in parenthesis indicates seeding rate: |
0 = no seed |
std = standard seeding rate |
5x = five times the standard rate |
10x = ten times the standard rate |
