Collecting Cones

At the time of the collection, examine the cut face of several cones to make sure that each cone has at least the minimum quantity of seed and that the seed is ripe and of good quality. Refer to the quality factors described in Assessing Cone Maturity. When collection begins, keep the test cones and put them in the top of the cone bags. Be sure that proper handling techniques are used throughout the collection process to avoid damaging the seed. Do not drop the cone bags or expose cones to damaging agents, such as gasoline or extreme temperatures.
