Types of Hardwood Seedlings

Bareroot

Most hardwood planting involves bareroot seedlings. Bareroot seedlings are grown at local and State forest tree nurseries. These seedlings generally are less expensive and easier to plant than containerized seedlings. Usually, bareroot seedlings are grown in a nursery for 1 year. They are lifted by cutting the tap root 8 to 10 inches below the soil surface and mechanically loosening the soil around the roots. Then they are graded and packed into bundles to keep the roots moist
