Types of Hardwood Seedlings

Two types of hardwood seedlings are grown at nurseries:

• Bareroot
• Containerized

Bareroot seedlings are grown in fields, much like any agricultural crop. The seedlings are called "bareroot” because their roots are exposed when they are planted.

Hardwoods grown in very small to very large (five gallons or more) containers generally are produced in greenhouses. Containerized seedlings are substantially more expensive than bareroot seedlings.
