Clearing

Remove all surface debris down to moist mineral soil within an area that is at least 6 inches in diameter. Remove duff, litter, rotten or charred wood, loose rock, ashes, snow, surface frost, and similar debris. After the tree has been planted, this material may be pushed back over the cleared surface to serve as mulch.
