Mulching

[photo] Using surface debris as mulch materialIf mulch is needed for seedling survival, add the mulch after planting. Mulch reduces moisture loss and slows down the invasion of competing vegetation. The most efficient source of mulch material is the surface debris and litter that was cleared from the planting spot.

Newspapers, cardboard, plastics, and woven mats have also been used as mulch, with limited success. Mulch mats made of these materials have been successful when they were designed specifically as mulch mats. Mulch mats should be designed with the seedling's needs for light and water in mind. A mat 2 to 3 feet square is desirable. Mulching with mats is expensive and is recommended only for special projects or as a last resort to meet the needs of specific small projects.
