Bakken Formation Oil Derrick Pump
Photo Credit: Licensed photo by Nathan/Adobe Stock photos.North Dakota, particularly the western region, is a significant oil and gas producer, with much of the development occurring on the Bakken Formation located within the Little Missouri National Grassland.
For questions about oil and gas permitting and production policies and procedures, please contact the Minerals and Lands Manager at the Medora or McKenzie Ranger District Stations of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands.
A history of minerals production in the region is available here.
Rangeland
Livestock grazing manages the grassland ecosystem over much of the Grassland.
Most grazing permits allow domestic cattle or sheep to graze on the grasslands; however, some private bison herds are on neighboring land.
Please remember:
- Leave all gates as you found them.
- Do not disturb grazing livestock.
- Bison can be dangerous.
If you have questions about grazing permits and other range activities, contact the Rangeland Manager at the Sheyenne Ranger District office.
