Elkhorn Campground

Overview
Elkhorn Campground is located on the scenic Thousand Lake Mountain, part of the Fremont River Ranger District, 20 miles northeast of Loa, Utah. At approximately 9,300 feet in elevation, visitors can enjoy cooler weather exploring local trails on foot, bike, or off-road vehicle (OHV). 

Facilities
The campground has one group site that can accommodate up to 75 people and up to 10 vehicles, with large tables, grills, Dutch oven cooking surfaces and a fire ring with benches. Single Sites are available on first-come first-serve basis. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided during the operating season. Roads and parking spurs are gravel. Elkhorn Ranger Station is just across a meadow from the site.

Natural Features
Thick stands of aspen, pine, and spruce trees cover the campground, offering pleasant shade. Summer wildflowers are abundant in the surrounding meadow.

Recreation
Miles of trails, including the Great Western Trail, crisscross the area, offering excellent hiking, biking and off-roading opportunities. Numerous sparkling alpine lakes provide great fishing and scenery.

Elkhorn Campground offers reservations for the group site, which can be made online by visiting the link above.
There are 7 additional campsites available to use on a first-come-first-served basis. FCFS sites are not available to reserve in advance online or by phone. Visitors must physically arrive at the campground to see if a site is available. There is no guarantee these sites will be available to purchase upon arrival

General Information

June - October, the campground closes seasonally over the winter. 

Quiet hours are from 10:00p.m. to 6:00a.m. 

Generator use is prohibited during quiet hours

  • OHVs are allowed only for ingress and egress of the campground. They are not permitted to be operated within the campground for any other reason.
  • Camping is limited to 16 consecutive days.
  • Pets must be on a leash at all times

Overnight Use:
Single Site: $12 per night
Group Site: $45 per night (1 - 75 people)

Fees are subject to change annually. Please visit Recreation.gov for more information on nightly fees. 

Fees for first-come-first-serve sites need to be paid within 30 minutes of arrival. Fees for these sites can be found posted on the information kiosk, along with self-pay envelopes. Payment can be deposited in the fee tube, located next to the kiosk.   

Please Note: All campgrounds on the Fishlake National Forest are managed by High Country Recreation under the terms and conditions of a concession permit that was issued to them by the Forest Service in 2020. Email: highcountryrec@gmail.com
 

  • Pets must be leashed at all times within this recreation area. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors and to protect wildlife.
  • Clean up dog waste and dispose of it properly.
  • Keep dogs from chasing, harassing, and disturbing wildlife, livestock or other visitors.
  • Yield to other hikers, horses, and other trail users by stepping off the trail and controlling your dog.

Directions

Elkhorn campground is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Loa, Utah on Thousand Lake Mountain. From Loa, travel N/NE on U-72 (paved road) for 12 miles; turn right (east) on FR206 (dirt road) and travel 7.6 miles to the campground. Turn right on FR210 for 0.2 miles.
