Polluted runoff favors plant species that are more tolerant of pollution and may change the buffer plant community over time. One may need to select plants tolerant of pollutant loading. Over time, trees and shrubs will naturally become established in herbaceous buffers. Periodic tree and shrub removal may be required to maintain dense herbaceous buffers or the desired mixed of woody species.
