Interpretation Guide
Longleaf pine is narrowly distributed species (3.8% of area), sparse among FIA plots, but high in importance when it occurs. This southern pine is modeled to expand its potential area greatly, though only a medium reliability model. Its adaptability is medium, and does well under fire which may increase in prominence. It is now only a fraction of its former status but we give it a fair capability rating under climate change and RCP 8.5 even puts habitat in northern sandy regions and the Black Hills of South Dakota. SHIFT reports it a viable infill species, but it also contrains the natural northward migration of the species, especially under RCP 8.5.
Family: Pinaceae
Guild: pioneer, dry-site intolerant
Functional Lifeform: large evergreen conifer
