Respect Wildlife
We share the outdoors with a variety of animals who make the forest or grassland their home. Remember, these are not pets. View wildlife from a safe distance- use the rule of “thumb”. If you hold your thumb up at arm’s length, does it cover the animal? Yes? Then you are where you should be.
- Never shout or make noise to get an animal's attention.
- Teach children not to approach, feed, yell or harass wild animals.
- Keep your dogs under control; do not let them chase or harass wildlife.
- Do not feed any animals and always pack out your trash.
- Rattlesnakes are a part of the local environment. Be alert and watch your step.
- Though most grazing in all areas is under permit with commercial operators that raise domestic cattle, there are some private bison herds. Please remember that bison can be dangerous. Keep your distance from all livestock. "Open range" is a term indicating an area with livestock roaming free, unrestricted by fences. Drive carefully in such areas, as animals will frequently be found on roads.
- State law applies to activities with the National Forest System lands. Please refer to Nebraska Game and Parks or South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks if you will be hunting or fishing.
