Ojo Sarco Prescribed Fire

The Ojo Sarco Prescribed Fire is part of a long-term fuels reduction project to reduce the threat of wildfire to adjacent and nearby communities. When wildfires encounter areas treated with fire, behavior typically moderates in ways that increase the safety of first responders, allow for community protection and result in better resource protection outcomes, including for tree survival and watershed protection.

Work in the Ojo Sarco unit began with green fuelwood collection by the public, followed by thinning, piling, public dead and down firewood collection and pile burning. This understory burn will focus on fuels on the forest floor, such as grasses, forbs, leaf litter, downed branches and brush. It may also fully burn occasional single trees or stands, which will help create an open canopy.
