Greys River District Small Aspen Patch Treatment

Up to 20 small aspen clones will be treated, with each treatment site about a quarter to a half acre across 7 units; see attached map. A total of 5-8 acres of aspen would be mechanically treated. Targeted aspen clones must have (1) 12 or fewer live, mature aspen trees within a 100-ft. diameter area; (2) separation of at least 200 feet from other mature aspen trees; and (3) limited recruitment potential (e.g., overstory of conifer). Live conifer trees within 1.5 tree heights of standing aspen(of any age) of selected patches would be hand-felled using chainsaws, retaining five-needle pine and legacy trees (e.g., large spruce and Douglas-fir trees mature before fire-suppression efforts began). Standing dead conifer trees (over 12 inch diameter) would be retained if can be done safely. Some but not all cut material would be cleared from treatment areas. Pile burning may be implemented. Following initial felling of conifers (e.g., after 1-2 years), and after a clone survivability assessment, mature aspen may be felled, scarified, or burned to help perpetuate the clone. Work will be done by hand with chainsaws; no motorized travel through roadless areas.
