Elk Ridge State Scenic Backway
Elk Ridge Road seems to be on top of the world. From here travelers see stunning views of Monument Valley, the Bears Ears National Monument, Canyonlands National Park and scenery nearly 200 miles in the distance. The backway follows the Elk Ridge spine at nearly 9,000 feet (often as a single lane) with panoramic views of red rock canyons and Canyonlands National Park. Near the start of the route, the road passes through the Bears Ears buttes on the northern section of the Shash Jaa unit of Bears Ears National Monument. These twin buttes stand over 8700 feet in elevation and are sacred places to many Native American tribes.
There are no facilities along the backway.
