Forest Product Permits

Permits are required to collect forest products that include, but are not limited to: bark, berries, boughs, bryophytes, bulbs, burls, cones, ferns, forbs, fungi (including mushrooms), grasses, mosses, nuts, pine straw, roots, sedges, seeds, transplants, tree sap, wildflowers, fence material, mine props, posts and poles, shingle and shake bolts, and rails.

Woodcutting Permits

Fuelwood permits for National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin typically go on sale in late May or early June. A valid permit is required for cutting and/or removing any wood products. 

Fuelwood permits may be obtained from the Forest Supervisor's Office in South Lake Tahoe by calling 530-543-2600 in mid-May to check on the sale date. Permits are valid in any of the open designated firewood cutting areas through November, depending on soil conditions. You must be at least 18 years of age and show a valid picture identification. 

Christmas Tree Permits

The Lake Tahoe Basin Christmas Tree Permit is temporarily paused to allow saplings to time to grow large enough to support a Christmas tree program in the future. Read More
