Post & Pole Permits
Post and pole permits are available for some areas on the Malheur National Forest. Contact us for additional details or to obtain a permit.
This permit valid only on Blue Mountain Ranger District.
Effective January 1, 2020, post and poles can be cut and removed from National Forest System lands on the Blue Mountain Ranger District with the following exceptions:
Post and poles may not be cut within: a posted sale area; 150 feet of a stream, pond, or lake; campgrounds; wilderness areas; wild and scenic corridors; designated old growth; or research plots.
For safety purposes, no post and pole cutting is allowed with 150 feet of the following roads and highways: all State, U.S. and County Highways, and Forest developed roads 15 (paved portion up to Parish Cabin), 1520, 16, 1640, and 36.
A maximum of 200 post/poles per household per year.
The following conditions apply and are noted on the permit:
- Motorized vehicles are not allowed off existing roads that are open to the public, and no skidding equipment is allowed unless approved in writing by the Forest Service.
- Only dead or down trees are to be removed unless specifically authorized on the permit.
- Maximum diameter for poles is 7 inches on the large end.
- Max diameter for posts is 10 inches on the large end.
- Maximum stump height is 6 inches.
- Slash or unused material resulting from permittee’s activities shall be removed from roads and ditches, and scattered or piled at least 10 feet from any green tree in openings or clearings.
- Load tickets must be attached to the back of the load and be clearly visible. Load tickets must be validated by completely removing the month and date of product removal.
- Permits terminate on December 31st of the year issued.

Blue Mountain Ranger District currently has two areas open for post and pole cutting. Please contact the district office at 541-575-3000 to learn more.
This permit valid only on Blue Mountain Ranger District.
Effective October 15, 2014 post and poles may be cut and removed from Galena personal use post and pole area on the Blue Mountain Ranger District. Please visit the district office for a map of the specified area. The designated area is marked with orange ribbon, orange paint and white tags that say "Galena Personal Use #1".
The following guidelines apply:
- The use of motorized vehicles including ATV and pickups will be allowed off existing roads. No heavy equipment including tractors, backhoes, skidders etc. will be allowed.
- A maximum of 200 post/poles per household per year.
- Only Lodge pole pine may be removed up to 8 inches on the large end. No other species of tree may be removed.
- Standing green, standing dead, and downed lodge pole pine may be removed.
- Maximum stump height is 6 inches.
- Slash or unused material resulting from permittee's activities shall be removed from roads and ditches, and scattered or piled at least 10 feet from any green tree in openings or clearings.
- Load tickets must be attached to the back of the load and be clearly visible. Load tickets must be validated by completely removing the month and date of product removal.
