  • CLOSED - Panther Creek Rec Area due to Storm Damage Alert

GAINESVILLE, GA — The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest has issued an official closure order for the Panther Creek Recreation Area following significant damage sustained during Hurricane Helene. The closure, which is effective immediately, is necessary to protect public health and safety due to hazardous conditions in the area.

Pursuant to Title 16 USC 551 and Title 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), entry and use of the Panther Creek Recreation Area, north of Historic Old Highway 441 and Grace Lane, is strictly prohibited. This includes all visitors seeking to access trails, camping sites, and other recreational facilities within the designated closure area.

“This closure is essential to ensure the safety of our visitors,” said Towdy Tipton, District Ranger, Chattooga River Ranger District. “Hurricane Helene caused severe damage to infrastructure and natural resources at Panther Creek, and the area remains unsafe for public use until further notice. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to assess and restore the site.”

The closure order remains in effect for up to two years or until conditions allow for safe public access. Only individuals with specific authorization, such as emergency personnel and permit holders, will be permitted entry during this time.

For updates and additional information regarding the closure, the public is encouraged to contact the Chattooga River Ranger District at (706) 754-6221 or visit the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest website.
