CHATTOOGA RIVER RANGER DISTRICT, Ga. – In response to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the Chattooga River Ranger District is authorizing the issuance of free-use firewood permits to the public.
Hurricane Helene recently caused significant flooding and hazardous winds across parts of Northeast Georgia. Staff at the Chattooga River Ranger District continue to address destruction such as downed trees and road damages. Free-use firewood permits will assist in these recovery efforts while promoting efficient use of downed timber.
“These permits will allow the public to collect firewood from storm-affected areas,” said District Ranger Towdy Tipton. “[This helps] clear debris while also providing a beneficial resource to residents.”

The permits allow for the collection of dead or down trees and branches along open Forest Service System Roads and other authorized firewood collection areas. Permit holders may collect up to 4 cords of firewood, equalling $20 in value. A cord of wood equates to a pile that is four feet high, four feet wide, and eight feet long. Firewood is authorized only for personal use and resale is not permitted.
Permits can be acquired at the Chattooga River Ranger District office in Lakemont, Georgia, until March 31st, 2025. They are not available online. For more information, contact Sarah Paski, timber resource specialist, by telephone at 770-519-5003 or by email at sarah.paski@usda.gov
