Forest Order

Pursuant to the Secretary of Agriculture's Regulations 36 CFR 261.50 (a), the following acts or omissions are prohibited within the area of the Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower within the Hoosier National Forest, Brownstown Ranger District. 

  1. Possession of an alcoholic beverage, as defined by state law, at Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower trailhead parking lot, on the lookout, and surrounding vicinity. See attached map. [36 CFR 261.58(bb)]
  2. Parking on or along Tower Ridge Road except at designated sites. [36 CFR 261.58 (g)]
  3. Placing paint, ink or other substances on the Hickory Ridge Lookout. [36 CFR 26 1.9(a)]
  4. Climbing the Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower other than by use of the stairs; rappelling from any portion of the tower; or otherwise attaching any object to the tower structure. [36 CFR 261. 53(e)] 

These restrictions are necessary for public safety and to protect the National Forest resources. 

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (e) the following persons are exempt from this order: 

  1. Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
  2. Any federal, State, or local officer involved in National Forest administration, law enforcement, search and rescue, or firefighting in performance of an official duty. 

Violation of the prohibitions of this Order are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an individual or $10,000.00 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months or both. [Titles 16 USC 551 , 18 USC 3559, and 18 USC 3571]
