Huzzah Ponds

Want a quick weekend outing in the forest? Check out the Huzzah pond trail great hiking experience! 

This 2.5-mile loop trail allows users the opportunity to spot wildlife like the whitetail deer, turkey, waterfowl, and songbirds.  As you traverse the rolling Ozark landscape, you’ll experience multiple ecosystems and forest types including the Huzzah ponds, savannahs, oak hickory, and shortleaf pine forest.

Fishing at Huzzah Ponds is also allowed.  Users can fish from the shore or boat, but boats are restricted to electric motors only. The ponds include Howe's Mill South (2-acre), Howe's Mill Lake (3-acre), Howe's Mill Pond (1-acre), and Huzzah Cutoff Pond (1-acre). Howe's Mill lake has 2 parking areas, for day use only, and a boat ramp for small non-motorized or electric motorboats.   

These ponds are the remnants of an old fish hatchery situated along MO Hwy 32.

When visiting, please remember

  • No overnight camping in day use areas at any time of year.
  • Dogs must be on a 6 foot leash in the day use area
  • No trash containers; please pack out all your trash.
  • Boats are allowed on Howe’s Mill lake, only electric motors are permitted.

No fees

Trail Use

Dogs are allowed on hiking trails, as long as they are kept on a leash. Unleashed dogs can pose a danger to your pet, the natural resources of the area, and other forest visitors.

  • Leashes must be six feet, or shorter, when in developed recreation sites, including trails within the boundaries (36 CFR 261.16(j)) when they are not inside an enclosed vehicle or tent.
  • Yield your leashed dog around other hikers and horses.
  • Pack out your dogs waste or bury it 100 feet from water and trails.

Boating

When boating with your dog, follow all Missouri State boating laws and only allow your animal on pet-friendly shorelines.

  • Use care when getting your dog in and out of the boat to ensure their safety.
  • Consider both you and your dog wearing a life jacket.
  • Provide shade for your pet.
  • Remember to bring their food and water as it may be unsafe for them to drink lake water.
  • Occasionally, bring your dog to land so that they can relieve themselves.

Directions

From Salem

  • Head south on N. Main St. toward W 4th St.
  • Turn left onto MO-32 E/MO-72/E Scenic Rivers Blvd for 17 miles
    • The boat launch parking will be on the left
    • Continue on M-32 for another .5 miles for the trailhead parking lot.
