Fire

The White Mountain National Forest fire program focuses on forest protection and management.  Fire is one of the many tools used on the Forest to maintain wildlife habitat diversity, encourage new plant growth in forested stands, and reduce the risk or severity of future fires.  Fire management also includes active management and/or suppression of natural or human caused ignitions, of which the forest experiences on average 5 of these ignition types, 10-20% of these are caused by lightning.
