Memorial Beach Picnic Site

The Memorial Beach Site was named to honor twelve individuals who perished in a plane crash in Sumner Strait . A memorial at the beach commemorates their lives. A 1,000-foot trail leads through an impressive grove of old growth trees to the beach and three dispersed camping and picnic sites. Special Features: Memorial Beach offers some of the most exquisite views of Sumner Strait , Kupreanof Island, Kuiu Island and on clear days the higher peaks of the mainland. Visitors also get to walk through a stand of old growth spruce on their way to the beach. Often whales, sea lions or seals swim by Memorial Beach, and birds of all kinds may be seen migrating over Sumner Straight.
