| Comments: | Fort Valley Exp. Forest, Ariz. May 1925. A patch of 12-year-old reproduction of ponderosa pine which started in an opening in the virgin stand 10 years before cutting. The oldest age class is 1914 but there are large numbers of 1917 and 1919 seedlings underneath. Sheep were excluded in 1914; grazed since then by cattle and horses. Taylor pasture near Fort Valley. The area as a whole was fully stocked with mature timber, poles, and advance reproduction before cutting. Since cutting, it presents the aspect of alternate patches of reproduction, groups of poles, and bare patches of reproduction (when tree groups were felled). These bare patches occupy from one-fourth to one-half of the total area. Seed trees must be left to restock them. Brush mostly piled and burned. G.A. Pearson |
