Comments: Herbaceous vegetation. Pine seedling about 10 years old in bunch of Andropogon scoparius in cinder region near lower limits of yellow pine type. Surface layer of loose cinders represents opposite extreme from clay soil. In both cases, however, a surface layer of mould and dead stems favors germination and early establishement of seedlings.
