Comments: Oats grown in two soils from Engelmann spruce type, north slope, 10,500 feet. Left, soil from under dense stand. Here the layer of humus is scarcely one-fourth-inch thick and beneath this is a gray or brown mineral soil. Right, soil fron an opening on ridge. Here the soil is dark to the depth of a foot underneath the litter.
