The Puerto Rico Highway and Transit Authority (PRHTA) will be starting a road rehabilitation contract on PR 191, including pavement recycling, guardrails replacement and drainage improvements, starting May 9, 2016 and continuing for several months. Activities will require closing one lane and managing traffic over one open lane, continuous hauling of road materials and traffic delays.
The work will start from the top of Rd 191 at Km 12.8 and proceed downhill. In order to work from Km 11.8 to Km 12.8 the Contractor will need to close at Km 11.8 on Monday 5/9 and Tuesday 5/10 restricting access to Mt. Britton trail and parking. Mt. Britton Tower can be accessed from El Yunque Trail during this time.
Please use caution when driving through the Forest.
Water and bathroom services are currently out of order at Yokahu Tower until further notice. Nearby facilities with these services include Palo Colorado and Sierra Palm Recreation Areas, or the El Portal Visitor Center, all located along the Rd 191 recreation corridor.
The Juan Diego Area will be closed temporarily to public access to perform restoration activities from March 6, 2017 until further notice.
The Juan Diego Area Ecological Rehabilitation Project will help restore the area due to increasing soil erosion and loss of vegetation caused by recreation uses that are affecting the water quality of the streams in this area. The proposed project is designed to revegetate and restore impacts to the area and minimize erosion.
