The Uwharrie National Forest Plan was revised in 2012, under the authority of the 1982 Planning Rule. In 2012, the US Forest Service adopted a new planning rule that directs forest plan management. The 2012 Planning Rule (26 CFR 219) required the Forest to modify the forest monitoring program to meet new monitoring requirements by 2016, and transitioned the forest to a biennial monitoring report, with a first report due in 2018.

In May 2012, the U.S. Forest Service National Forests in North Carolina unveiled the revised Uwharrie National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (the Plan).

The Plan promotes forest restoration and protects waterways and cultural resources.

The major themes of the Plan are:

  • restoring the forest to a more natural ecological condition;
  • better management of cultural resources; and providing outstanding; and
  • sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities, with excellent trails and facilities.

The science-based Plan is the result of collaboration with a broad base of public and private stakeholders and partners.

Proposed Plan Documents (pre-May 2012)

The U.S. Forest Service invites the public to comment on the proposed land and resources management plan and draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the Uwharrie National Forest.

The comment period lasts for 90 days following the publication of the Notice of Availability (NOA) of the DEIS in the Federal Register. The NOA was published in the Federal Register on June 24, 2011.

Background:

The Forest Service, together with the public, began revising the Uwharrie Forest Plan in 2005. Proposed Uwharrie Plans were published for public comment in 2007 and again in 2009. However, the federal regulations which guide the planning process have changed. We have built on the good collaborative contributions made by our stakeholders in previous planning efforts while also using the environmental impact statement process to develop a new proposed Uwharrie Plan that fully meets the requirements of the original 1982 planning regulations.

On March 11, 2010, the U.S.D.A. Forest Service issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) in the Federal Register to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement and Revised Plan for the Uwharrie National Forest. The 60-day comment period on the NOI has now ended and copies of all comments received are posted here along with a description of how the Forest addressed these comments in the draft Uwharrie Plan and DEIS.
