Partnerships

Flathead National Forest works with many different non-profit partner organizations that help us accomplish our mission. Many of the groups recruit, train and host volunteers to assist with specific forest projects such as trail maintenance, historic building restoration, educating youth, doing wildlife surveys, invasive species monitoring, hand-pulling weeds, packing in supplies for backcountry crews, staffing a lookout and providing forest information to visitors.

Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation

Providing volunteer stewardship for Montana’s 1.5 million acre Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. We work to keep trails open in The Bob, support wilderness conservation, and engage youth and adults in wilderness experiences that change lives and instill a land ethic.

Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead

Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead is a service organization formed in 1973. Our purpose is to perpetuate enjoyable common sense use of horses in the back country: assist government agencies in maintenance and management of the resource; and educate, encourage and solicit active public participation in wise and sustaining use of horses and use by people commensurate with our heritage and the back country resource.

Flathead Area Mountain Bikers

Flathead Area Mountain Bikers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Our mission is to preserve and advance mountain bike activities in the Flathead Valley of northwest Montana.

Flathead Audubon

The Flathead Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our mission is to: conserve birds, wildlife habitat and ecosystem diversity; promote awareness and appreciation of the natural world through education and advocacy; work with diverse groups and agencies to achieve sound decisions on natural resource issues; provide community services such as school programs, work projects, and field trips. While our efforts focus on northwest Montana, we believe in the protection of the earth and all its inhabitants.

Flathead Snowmobile Association

Working in conjunction with the Montana Snowmobile Association, the US Forest Service and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Flathead Snowmobile Association works to maintain access to hundreds of miles of trails, over 200 of which are groomed in three different areas. 

The Flathead Snowmobile Association is a membership of snowmobilers and outdoor enthusiasts who endeavor to educate the public about the sport of snowmobiling, enhance the riding experience in our area, promote safety, and provide opportunities for family recreation.

Glacier Institute

The Glacier Institute, a private nonprofit, serves adults and children as an educational leader in the Crown of the Continent ecosystem with Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest at its center. Emphasizing outreach and field-based learning experiences, the Institute provides an objective and science-based understanding of the area’s ecology and its interaction with people. 

North Shore Nordic Club

The North Shore Nordic Club is a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to providing quality groomed cross-country skiing in the lower Flathead Valley. The Club maintains over 30 kilometers of trail at two trail systems: Foothills Nordic Trails in Bigfork and Blacktail Nordic Trails above Lakeside.

Northwest Montana Chapter Forest Fire Lookout Association

The Northwest Montana Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Federal and State agencies in the restoration and maintenance of fire lookouts and other support structures on public land.

Northwest Montana Back Country Horsemen

Northwest Montana Backcountry Horsemen purpose is to perpetuate enjoyable common sense use of horses in the back country; assist government agencies in maintenance and management of the resource; and educate, encourage and solicit active public participation in wise and sustaining use of horses and use by people commensurate with our heritage and the back-country resource.

Our vision is to ensure stock use continues on all public lands and to expose the wonders of our wilderness and wild places to the generations through fun, inspiring and thought provoking programs and partnerships; to encourage responsible horsemanship by teaching Leave No Trace principles in the backcountry.

Swan Valley Connections

Swan Valley Connection’s mission is to conserve the intact ecosystems within and surrounding the Swan Valley and to strengthen the connection between people and the natural world through collaboration and experiential learning. Our vision is that the Swan watershed remains an intact ecosystem, supports a resilient community that values its natural resources, and serves as a model for enduring stewardship.
