Permits
Special Use Permits
Special events or commercial use of public lands require a permit. This includes commercial activities such as filming or guiding, and non-commercial uses such as organized events or gatherings.
Harvesting Huckleberries
Commercial gathering of huckleberries is not permitted on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, but everyone is welcome to gather huckleberries for personal use.
Morel Mushrooms
The National Forest requires a free, mushroom harvesting permit in order to appropriately manage mushroom harvesting activities, monitor use, and protect resources.
Gathering Firewood
Firewood cutters must obtain a free permit and abide by the terms when cutting in Northern Region national forests.
Christmas Trees
Cutting the family Christmas tree is a timeless tradition. You can purchase your tree permits online or at one of our offices between mid-October to the end of December.
Outfitters and Guides
As partners in providing unique recreational experiences, commercial outfitters and guides have an integral role in fulfilling one of the agency's missions to serve the public.
Recreation Residences
Summer homes, also referred to as recreation residences, have a long tradition on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Most are located around Priest Lake.
