Access to Forest Recreation Facilities Impacted this Summer Due to U.S. Highway 385 Construction

Release Date: April 18th, 2025

Custer, S.D., Apr. 18, 2025 – Access to recreational facilities on the Black Hills National Forest will be impacted this spring and summer due to the construction work on U.S. Highway 385.

Pactola Visitor Center will be closed all summer. The fishing pier on the west side of Sheridan Lake (along Hwy 385) as well as Trail 6830, will be closed from Apr 21 through Jun 13, 2025, coinciding with the segment of Highway 385 that will be closed during this time.

Access to Pactola Reservoir and Sheridan Lake recreation areas along U.S. Highway 385 will be affected by road construction as well. “It’s important to plan your route before you go,” said Scott Jacobson, Public Affairs Officer, Black Hills National Forest. “For example, if you are planning to recreate on the north side of Sheridan Lake, you must come from the north. If you are planning to recreate on the south side of Sheridan Lake, you must come from the south.”

The public is encouraged to visit the SD DOT Highway 385 construction website at https://us-385.com/. The website offers the latest updates on segment closures with dates, blasting, resurfacing segments as well expected delays by use of pilot cars. To receive text messages with updates on the Highway 385 project, text “US385” to 605-566-4041.
