Railroad Buttes OHV Area

In addition to miles of trails, the Railroad Buttes OHV Area features three large open-riding areas that cover 1,745 acres in total. These are:

  • Railroad Buttes North - Parking Lot & Hill Climb
  • Railroad Buttes West
  • Railroad Buttes East 

There is a large gravel parking area just through the main gate with a vault toilet.

Dispersed camping is allowed but there is no potable water.  

Please recreate with respect and pack out all trash. 

Reservations

Reservations are not available. The site is first-come, first-served.

General Information

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (also known as MVUMs) show District roads, trails, and riding areas.  MVUMs also contain rules, regulations and prohibitions to be aware of.  

The Fall River Ranger District MVUM including the Railroad Buttes OHV Area is available here.  

It's very important to Know Before You Go!

Open year-round. 

  • Stay on designated trails and within the boundaries of areas open to cross-country travel.  
  • Fireworks and shooting are prohibited; there is a shooting closure area in the middle of the travel management area.

Directions

From Rapid City, SD head east on Highway 44 about 21 miles then turn south on 160th Avenue and travel approximately 3.5 miles.  The main parking lot and hill climb area are on the west side of the road.
