Buffalo Gap National Grassland
The Buffalo Gap National Grassland, consisting of almost 600,000 acres, stretches from Kadoka, SD all the way to the tri-state border of South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is divided into two ranger districts; the Fall River Ranger District located in Hot Springs, SD and the Wall Ranger District located in Wall, SD. The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is also home to the National Grasslands Visitor Center which is co-located with the Wall Ranger District office.
The Buffalo Gap National Grassland is a destination for OHV riders, rock-collectors, and hunters from across the nation. It offers motorized trails through badlands terrain and open riding areas for beginning to advanced riders. Railroad Buttes and Baja are well-known OHV Trailheads and riding areas. While there are many access points to search for rare and precious Fairburn agates on the BGNG, the French Creek Campground provides overnight camping in a beautiful riparian meadow directly adjacent to an agate bed.
Non-motorized users, mostly horseback riders and hikers, can enjoy remote, recommended-for-wilderness natural areas that are a backdrop to the more heavily visited Badlands National Park and Black Hills National Forest.
