Active Wildfire Information
Wildfires occur regularly during the summer months on the Rio Grande National Forest. But most garner little attention from the media and public. Unlike many of the "fire" national forests, the Rio's fire occurrence is relatively low. However, when we do have large wildfires, conditions are "just right" and the fires are likely to be very resistant to our control efforts. During these times are when you want to hear from us, and fast! You want to know if the fire will affect you and your family and friends. We get it, and we always do our best to get you that information in a timely manner.
When A Fire is Starting to get Bigger (or is very visible)
We'll start to put out information on any wildfire that has the potential to be visible and cause concerns, as soon as we are able to gather quality information and put it in a format that is the most meaningful to you. We will not hastily put out unverified information that could prove to be more problematic than the lack of information.
Here in the San Luis Valley, we will post news releases to the media and on our web pages. We also post updates frequently to Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). As the need for Information increases, we'll bring on additional PIO's, or Public Information Officers, to help us create Fact Sheets and Daily Update Reports, and populate Inciweb then venture out into the communities affected to provide on-site fire information.
