Smaller, more frequent burns will be used
Saguache, CO, Feb. 3, 2025 – The Saguache Ranger District announced today new plans for the Laughlin Gulch prescribed fire project west of Saguache. Occasional burning could begin as early as February 10 and will continue through the spring months as conditions allow.
With this tactic, firefighters will strategically apply fire to small portions of the project area that are snow free. The snow adjacent to the open areas will serve as the primary control feature. Each day a burn is conducted, the additional treated acres will add depth to the overall security of the burn area. Ignitions will take place only if burning is determined to have a high probability of meeting treatment objectives.
“For the Laughlin Gulch burn this year, we will be using a different tactic that takes advantage of favorable burning conditions over a longer time period,” said Tristram Post, Saguache District Ranger. “The smaller burns within the project area will eventually be connected as the snow melts and new aspects become dry enough to burn.”
Part of the La Garita Hills Restoration Project, this Saguache Ranger District burn area is approximately 10 miles west of Saguache, CO. The Laughlin Gulch prescribed fire aims to treat approximately 1,240 acres of slash, grass and needle cast and is designed to improve winter range habitat for area big game.
Due to the location of the project area, smoke may be visible from around the San Luis Valley and may be heavier locally. No significant smoke impacts are expected.
Burning days will be announced on the Rio Grande National Forest Facebook and X social media platforms.
