Safety & Emergency Planning

Wildfire smoke information:

San Juan National Forest Fire Information Line (970) ‪403-5212‬: During fire season, this phone line will provide pre-recorded information on current wildfire conditions and restrictions for the San Juan National Forest.

Resources to help you prepare for an emergency:

  • Emergency and Evacuation Planning: When an emergency strikes there may not be much time to respond. Proactive planning and preparation can be the key to surviving an emergency. Planning for an evacuation should occur well before an emergency happens. Because a wildfire is a dynamic event, there will potentially not be much time for homeowners to respond an evacuation order. It will be important for people to think clearly and act decisively when they are told to evacuate.
  • Firewise USA®: Voluntary program that provides a framework to help neighbors get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community.
  • Go Bag: Ideas and suggestions to get started on your personal KITS
  • Reverse 911: One of the best ways you can help your neighbors is to make them aware of how to sign up for emergency notifications. Please share this information liberally.
    • La Plata County: Calls will automatically go to your landline, but you can also register up to 5 cell phone(s) or VOIP
    • Archuleta County: Register how and where you would like to receive emergency notifications. Covers Pagosa Springs, Chromo, Arboles, Southern Mineral County and Southern Hinsdale County
    • Montezuma and San Juan Counties: Register your cell phones and receive e-mail notices. No Reverse 911 to landlines at this time.
  • USDA Forest Service Wildfire Risk to Communities: Free, easy-to-use website with interactive maps and resources to help communities understand and reduce wildfire risk.
  • Inciweb: For fire incident details from around the nation.
