The Glade
The Glade landscape covers approximately 165,00 acres in the northwest portion of the Dolores Ranger District. The name "Glade" refers to the many wetlands and meadows scattered across the mesa that are attractive for big game animals and migratory birds, including a large body of water at its' center called Glade Lake. The landscape is divided into eight zones: Brumley, Calf, Glade, Lone Mesa, Long Park, Mair, Sagehen, and Salter.
Much of the land is composed of hills and mesas with an average elevation of 8,000 feet and creek drainages leading down to rugged Dolores Canyon. Along U.S. Route 491 from the Utah state line are irrigated fields and other private lands. Low elevations mainly consist of rolling hills covered in sagebrush, oak brush, juniper and pinyon pines with sparse cottonwood trees along creeks. Middle and higher elevations have mesa tops are covered with oak brush, aspens, firs, spruces, grass, wildflowers, cover flats and meadows.
General Information
Recreation activities include hunting, dispersed camping, and OHV use primarily during general the rifle seasons running from the beginning of October thru mid-November. Many hunters deem this particular area as their destination particularly during the 3rd and 4th hunting seasons.
During summer months, OHV use is popular on many of the existing system and non-system roads. Many recreationists, and especially hunters, enjoy the use of OHVs. No designated trail system exists throughout this area so motorized use is restricted to roads. Since the Glade is generally flat with large open parklands, it is often difficult to keep motorized vehicles restricted to designated roads. Various roads also provide access to BLM lands north of the Glade.
A few well-maintained roads lead to primitive four-wheel-drive ATV roads that access the backcountry but many are impassable during wet and snowy weather. Roads are closed seasonally to vehicular traffic but snowmobiles are welcome in designated areas.
