Junction Creek Campground

Junction Creek Campground is located just 5 miles northwest of Durango, is a good base camp for area activities. Four camping loops are nestled amongst the ponderosa pines with a total of 44 campsites, 29 reservable sites and 14 sites with electrical hook-ups. It also has one group campsite accommodating up to 50 people.

The day-use loop has one group picnic site that can accommodate 65 people and includes a pavilion, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, and electrical hookups. This group day use area is reservable.. There is also one family picnic site available on a first-come, first-served basis.

If the site is empty, campers may come in anytime.

Quiet time is typically between 10pm - 6am. Please be a good neighbor and limit use of generators to no more than one hour at a time.

Directions

From Durango, CO: Travel to North Main and turn west on 25th street (across the street from the La Plata County Fairgrounds). 25th street turns into Junction Road, then Junction Creek Road. Follow this road approximately 5.5 miles to the campground entrance.

Parking

Equipment with wheels (RVs, campers, cars) must fit in the parking spur.  There is not any overflow parking available.

Hiking Info

Junction Creek Trail/Colorado Trail: The Colorado Trail spans from Denver to Durango with Junction Creek Trail being the last (or the first) section of this through hike. This lovely trail can be accessed from the campground as it meanders along junction creek. 

Animas Overlook: Located approximately 7 miles past Junction Creek Campground, the Animas Overlook is a wonderful, short hike and picnic spot. The self-guided, interpretive path is 0.8 mile loop through a Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest, following the edge of the mesa overlooking the Animas River Valley. There are several overlooks and some informative signs that touch on the history of the area and the role of water and other resources. The trail has been designed to be ADA accessible and has no more than a 5% grade and three-foot-wide pavement. Also provided are handicapped accessible toilets and picnic facilities with barrier-free benches, tables and fire grills.

Fishing - River/Stream Info

Fishing opportunities along Junction Creek: The campground is on a south-facing hillside with Junction Creek 1/4 mile below. Skilled fishermen may have luck near the campground, but chances improve upstream.
