  • Post-Storm Road Conditions

Recent storms have caused degrading road conditions in some parts of the forest, especially on the Jicarilla Ranger District, where roads are largely inaccessible.

With more weather forecasted, visitors should understand that road conditions can change fast: A road used to enter the forest may not be passable to exit.

     Consider the following safety tips:

    • Stay tuned to weather forecasts and avoid forest roads when possible during and right after storms.
    • Have a backup plan.
    • Share your travel plans with friends or family.
    • Be prepared to be self-sufficient if stuck. Consider supplying yourself with the "10 essentials":
      • Navigation: Map and/or GPS device
        (with extra batteries).
      • Sun Protection: Sun glasses,
        sunscreen, hat.
      • Insulation: Dress in layers:
        waterproof shell, down jacket, hats,
        gloves, and footwear.
      • Illumination: Headlamp (with extra
        batteries packed).
      • First-Aid: Tailored for winter travel
to include hand and feet warmers.
      • Fire: Waterproof matches. Be aware
        of any fire restrictions.
      • Repair Kit and Tools: Duct tape,
        knife, and scissors.
      • Nutrition: An extra day’s worth of
        meals.
      • Hydration: Extra water and ways to
        purify from natural sources.
      • Emergency Shelter: Tent, tarp, bivy
        sack, or emergency space blanket.
