Fuelwood Permits
Fuelwood permits for 2026 are currently for sale in person and online. The following types are available:

Tip: Most seasonal road closures are in effect Jan. 1 - April 30. Permits are made available year-round to reduce long lines in the spring—buy online.
Instructions
Each permit will list terms that must be followed by permit holders. Additionally, the Fuelwood Guide (English | Spanish) gives instructions on using your permit, transporting fuelwood, roads, measuring volume, and snags.

Purchase Permits
If purchasing in person, contact open offices to speak with our customer service representatives about in-person availability. If purchasing online, go to the Special Forest Product E-Permits webpage.
Free-use permits for the forest's east side are only available from the Camino Real and Questa ranger districts in Peñasco and Questa.
Be Prepared
To expedite the process, customers should be prepared to provide the following:
- Full name and ID;
- Mailing address;
- Vehicle information;
- Valid credit card number
- Designated haulers (in-person sales only): Their full name and state ID number (driver's license or ID)
- Each permit holder can have up to two haulers listed. They must be added to the permit before the permit is sold.
- If you plan to have designated haulers, permit must be purchaed in-person. There is no online option at this time.

Yes. Carson National Forest offices are normally open weekdays, except for federal holidays; however, some offices are experiencing limited capacity so please call ahead to ensure sales are available at the time of interest.
At this time, our offices are only accepting debit and credit card purchases. We accept all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.
Any of the Carson National Forest district offices can issue permits. It does not need to be your local office. You should leave a voicemail at only one location and provide a name and call back number.
We ask that customers DO NOT leave credit card information on the voicemail.
If you have a designated hauler or cutter, the driver's license and vehicle information of the hauler or cutter will be required.
Customers may experience busy signals and/or be directed to voicemail; however, representatives will be monitoring voicemails and following up as soon as possible. You should leave a voicemail at only one location and provide a name and call back number. We ask that customers DO NOT leave credit card information on the voicemail.
This year, a $20 permit will be good for up to 10 cords. Dead-and-down permits, which expire on Dec. 31 annually, are valid on the entire forest, except in designated wilderness and restricted permit areas.
