Amole Canyon Group Shelter

The Amole Group Shelter is located immediately adjacent to the popular wooded Amole Canyon Day Use Area at 8,400 feet in elevation. The group shelter accommodates up to 100 people with plenty of solitude since this is the only group facility in this location.

Directions

Take Highway 518 to the Amole Canyon Day Use Area at Forest Road 703. Drive a half mile and turn right onto the gated road.

Recreation Opportunities

Biking - Mountain Info

The Amole Canyon Trail (#10) and its many loops are popular for mountain biking. 

Biking - E-biking Info

Ojito Maes Trail (#182)

  • The trail is open to motorized uses, including all classes of e-bikes.
  • Use the trail to connect to a larger network of motorized trails.
  • The Amole Canyon Trail, and its many loops, is not open to e-bikes.

Day Hikes Info

Hikers can take the Meadow (10G) and Lost (10H) loop trails directly from the campground to connect to the larger Amole Canyon Trail system.

Horseback Riding Info

Equestrian riders can take the Meadow (10G) and Lost (10H) loop trails directly from the campground to connect to the larger Amole Canyon Trail system.

OHV Trail Riding Info

Ojitos Maes Trail (#182)

  • This is the only motorized trail out of the Amole Canyon Day Use Area.
  • Open to the following motorized uses: ATVs, motorcycles and e-bikes.
  • Take this trail to connect with a larger network of motorized trails.
  • Access this trail by using the group shelter road and Forest Road 703.

OHV Camping Info

This campground can be used as a homebase for ATV and motorcycle visitors to access the Ojito Maes Trail (#182) and a large connecting network of roads and trails.

Picnicking - Groups Info

There are two picnic tables under the shelter.

Viewing Wildlife Info

Elk are known to frequent the area in the spring.

Hunting Info

Located within Game Management Unit 49, the group shelter is a great homebase for your hunting trip.

Please remember that discharing a firearm is prohibited:

  • In or within 150 yards of a building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area and
  • Across or on a National Forest System road or a body of water adjacent thereto, or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result in such discharge.
