Cebolla Mesa Campground

Camp in a piñon-juniper woodland along the gorge, where the Rio Grande flows some 800 feet below.

Drive with caution: Spring snowmelt can create very muddy conditions on Cebolla Mesa Road (#9).

The campground is also the day use parking and trailhead for the Cebolla Mesa Trail, which leads down to the wild and scenic river.

Directions

8.3 miles Southwest of Questa. Take State Highway 522, 4.9 miles south from Questa to Forest Road #9. Drive west for 3.4 miles to campground. Forest Road #9 is a dirt/gravel road and is hazardous in muddy conditions.

Hiking Info

Take the Cebolla Mesa Trail directly from the campground down to the Rio Grande.

Fishing - River/Stream Info

  • Hike to the River: The Rio Grande sits at the bottom of the Cebolla Mesa Trail, which is about one mile with 800 feet of elevation loss.
  • Special Trout Waters: An Xmas Chile Water designation is in place for this section of the Rio Grande to help protect and conserve the Rio Grande cutthroat trout. Check with the New Mexico Department of Wildlife for restrictions.

Enjoy breathtaking views over the Rio Grande Gorge from the campground.
