About the Area
The geography of Southeastern Arizona is comprised of the Sonoran Desert, but includes the coniferous Arizona Mountains forests and Sierra Madre Occidental forests at higher elevations. The region has several mountain ranges, including the Chiricahua Mountains, Huachuca Mountains, Santa Ritas, Santa Catalinas, Rincons, Piñalenos, and others.
The populated areas include Tucson, Green Valley, Nogales, Safford, Sierra Vista, Douglas, as well as the smaller communities, such as Bisbee, Rodeo, Benson, Wilcox, and Sonoita. The area also contains several major military populations, such as the U.S. Army post of Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson.
Southern Arizona has several astronomical observatories, such as the Kitt Peak National Observatory, and is the home of several large National Monuments and Saguaro National Park.
The Coronado National Forest consists of five Ranger Districts and a Supervisor's Office. One District office is located in each of the following Southern Arizona Communities: Douglas, Nogales, Safford, and Sierra Vista. The Santa Catalina District and the Supervisor’s Office are located in Tucson.
