Partners celebrate new interpretive exhibits in Sabino Canyon
Tucson, Ariz., (December 17, 2024) – Over 100 community members came to celebrate the remaking of a visitor facility in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area on Saturday, December 14, 2024. A newly renovated open-air shelter was unveiled with new interpretive exhibits teaching visitors about canyon ecology and geology.
The new facility is located along Upper Sabino Canyon Road approximately a one-mile walk from the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center. The site is also the first stop for the Sabino Canyon Crawler.
The new interpretive panels introduce visitors to aquatic ecology, the source of water in Sabino Canyon, and what happens to the water as it flows into the Tucson basin. A new restroom and potable water fountain were installed as part of the project.
The Friends of Sabino Canyon led the design and execution of the project. Financial contributions from members, private donors, Coronado National Forest, and grant funding from the Secure Rural Schools Act recommended by the Southern Arizona Resource Advisory Community made it possible.
“Our mission is to conserve, protect, and enhance this place,” said Jim Darling, President of the Friends of Sabino Canyon, “this project, a partnership with the US Forest Service, is one of many we have been working on to enhance one of the most beloved places in Tucson.”
“There’s no way this project would happen without the Friends of Sabino Canyon and the support of all of our other partner groups,” said Don Delmastro, District Ranger for the Santa Catalina Ranger District.
