Dead and Down Fuelwood Permit For Personal Use

Area Status: Year-round

Definition: Dead and down is dead wood lying on the ground. Types of wood include softwood (pine and fir) and hardwood (oak and juniper).

Fuelwood Cutting Areas: The fuelwood cutting areas on National Forest System lands on the Safford Ranger District are within the Pinaleño, Galiuro and Santa Teresa Mountains.  Your permit must indicate which cutting area and fuelwood type you selected.  Designated cutting areas and prohibited areas are described below. Fuelwood cutting area maps are available at the District Office.  Fuelwood cutting is only allowed within 300 feet of existing roads. Vehicles are restricted to one vehicle length on either side of existing roads. Note: Locked gates restrict access to some roads. Coordinate with private landowners to access those areas.

Hardwood Cutting Areas

Landsman Camp Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering is prohibited in all other areas within the Santa Teresa Mountains.

Stockton Pass Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering is prohibited in all other areas not included on the map for the southern Pinaleño and Greasewood Mountains.

Galiuro-Ash Creek Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering is prohibited in all other areas not included on the map for the Galiuro Mountains.

Swift Trail (Forest Boundary to Arcadia) Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering is prohibited in all other areas not included on the map for the Central Pinaleño Mountains.

Tripp Canyon/West Peak Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering is prohibited in all other areas not included on the map for the northern Pinaleño Mountains.

 

Softwood Cutting Areas

Arcadia to Clark Peak Cutting Area

Fuelwood gathering from Shannon Campground to Clark Peak is prohibited between November 15th and April 15th.*  Fuelwood gathering is prohibited year-round in the following areas: 
Goudy Canyon Natural Area and all other areas not included on the map for the Central-Northern Pinaleño Mountains. 

*Weather dependent - Gate opening may be delayed due to snow and road conditions.

At a Glance

Cutting Period:Fuelwood gathering is allowed year-round. Permits issued between April 15 and November 15 are valid for three months. Permits issued between November 15 and April 15 are valid for one month.  Some areas of the Pinaleño Mountains are closed to cutting between November 15 and April 15.  See Softwood Cutting Area section above for area descriptions. 
Permit Info:Fuelwood permits for the Safford Ranger District must be purchased at the Safford Ranger District office. Your permit must indicate which cutting area you selected.  Please call office (928) 428-4150 for additional information. 
Information Needed:Make, Model and License Plate number of vehicle to be used for fuelwood collection. License Plate number for trailer if planning to use one.
Fees:$20.00 per permit. $20.00 per permit. Select up to 10 cords of softwood or hardwood ($2/cord). A cord is 4 X 4 X 8: Four feet wide, four feet high, eight feet long.  A cord is 4 X 4 X 8: Four feet wide, four feet high, eight feet long.
Open Season:Year-round (Weather dependent; a portion of the upper Pinaleño Mountains are closed seasonally from November 15 to April 15.)
Restrictions and Information:
  1. Chain saws must have spark arrestors.
  2. Vehicles are restricted to one vehicle length on either side of existing roads.
  3. The permit and load tag must be in your possession when cutting fuelwood and must be presented to a Law Enforcement Officer or Forest Service representative upon request. The load tag must be attached to your load and be visible.
  4. Failure to comply with any of these restrictions is a violation of Federal Regulations and is grounds for citation and prosecution. There is a $5,000 fine and/or 6 months in jail for cutting or damaging any live tree.
  5. Leave gates as you find them.
  6. Please, no littering.
  7. Drive slowly when crossing private property.
  8. Do not drive on roads when wet as they may become impassable or damaged.
  9. Fuelwood collected with a personal use permit is not to be resold.
